UGC: earning money without a big following?
Yes. If you can make good content, your first paid creator project can come long before your own account is big.
Because with UGC, the content itself can be the product.
The company then isn't paying mainly for how many people follow you. It's paying for you to produce videos or photos the brand can use itself.
For example for:
TikTok ads, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, social media, product pages or websites.
At a glance
- UGC isn't automatically influencer marketing.
- You don't necessarily have to publish the content on your own profile.
- Follower count can be secondary.
- Camera presence, storytelling and natural product presentation count.
- Usage rights still need to be properly agreed.
What actually is UGC?
UGC originally stands for “user-generated content”.
In today's creator marketing, the term often refers to content that creators produce specifically for companies.
Typical formats:
- product demonstrations
- testimonials
- unboxings
- how-to videos
- before-and-after scenarios
- problem–solution videos
- short ad clips
- lifestyle shots
- multiple hook variants for ads
The content can then appear on the company's own channels.
Example: five videos instead of 50,000 followers
Example
A skincare brand needs five short videos for social ads.
- Video 1
- the product in use
- Video 2
- problem → solution
- Video 3
- personal testimonial
- Video 4
- quick hook for TikTok
- Video 5
- alternative opening for Instagram ads
The brand supplies the brief.
You produce the videos.
The brand then publishes them.
Your own reach isn't necessarily the main value here.
What makes a good UGC creator
- Natural on camera
- People shouldn't immediately think: “That's a classic advert.”
- Good hooks
- The first few seconds often decide whether someone keeps watching.
- Storytelling
- Problem → experience → solution can be stronger than a plain product description.
- A feel for the platform
- TikTok content looks different from a glossy TV ad.
- Reliability
- Understanding the brief, delivering on time, implementing feedback properly.
UGC or influencer partnership?
| UGC | Influencer partnership |
|---|---|
| The content is the main value | Content + the creator's own reach |
| Often published by the brand | Often published by the creator |
| A big following isn't essential | The community can be a key part of the value |
| Often ads, website, social | Often awareness, reach, community |
| Production skills are central | Brand fit + community + content |
The two can be combined.
A creator can produce UGC and publish on their own profile as well.
But then two separate services are involved.
What is paid for in UGC?
Not just “30 seconds of video”.
Relevant factors can include:
- concept
- shoot
- editing
- number of variants
- multiple hooks
- voice-over
- raw files
- usage period
- platforms
- paid ads
- editing rights
- additional formats
Which is why:
Production and usage are not the same thing.
Clarify before you take the job
- How many videos or photos?
- What length?
- Which platform?
- Which messages?
- What are the no-gos?
- How many rounds of revisions?
- Where can the content be used?
- For how long?
- Organic or paid ads?
- Is raw material needed?
In short
UGC can dramatically lower the barrier to entering the creator business.
You don't necessarily need a big community.
You need something else:
the ability to produce content a company actually wants to use.
Good at making content?
Then UGC can be an interesting first way to earn money – even while your own profile is still small.
